Because Tusk had been very much Lindsey’s vision. There’s no doubt that having come off Tusk there was a conscious effort to make Mirage into more of a band album. "I don’t think it would be wrong to say it sort of got overlooked. Upon the release of a deluxe reissue of the album in 2016, Mick Fleetwood had this to say:

In the years since its release, Mirage has become a somewhat overlooked album in the Fleetwood Mac canon, even if one only considers the albums made with Buckingham and Nicks in the band.

The album was also notable for being the first Fleetwood Mac album released after the launch of MTV, with the band taking full advantage of the video format and producing elaborate and expensive music videos for 'Hold Me' and 'Gypsy' that got heavy rotation on the channel and kept the band feeling relevant. Critical reception at the time was mostly warm, with Rolling Stone praising the album's sunny charms and the fact that the band had a clear group personality. The album also contained four hit singles, which we will discuss as we get to them. It is certified double platinum in the US and platinum in the UK. Upon release, Mirage reached #1 in America (spending five weeks at the top spot and a total of 18 weeks in the top ten). As with Tusk, Lindsey Buckingham served as de facto producer, working with Richard Dashut and Ken Caillat. Mirage was recorded in France, as well as at Larrabee Sound Studios and the Record Plant in Los Angeles. Most successfully, Stevie Nicks released her solo debut album Bella Donna on July 27, 1981. The Visitor by Mick Fleetwood was released in June 1981, recorded in Ghana and featuring guest appearances by both Peter Green and George Harrison. It peaked at #32 in America, though the single 'Trouble' went to #1 in Australia. Law and Order by Lindsey Buckingham was released October 3, 1981. The band then took a break from each other which allowed three of the band members to release solo albums in 1981. Tusk had come out in October of 1979 and the band had toured the world in support of that album, resulting in the 1980 Live album. The release of Mirage followed a hiatus from the band. It was released on the 18th of June, 1982 on Warner Bros.
I'm going to tag those from the Tusk thread to let them know this is opening, but of course everyone is welcome to trees & Roll was Fleetwood Mac's 13th studio album overall and the fourth made with the lineup of Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood.
